Tattoo on the collarbone, does it hurt? And 5 other things worth knowing

Collarbone is quite a safe place to choose for the first tattoo – it is easy to hide it under your clothes, or to display it on the beach in summer. The location seems great, but does it have any downsides?

What is the meaning of a tattoo on the collarbone?

As with most places on your body, the same is with a collarbone tattoo, it’s the design that matters, not the location. When deciding on a particular design, think carefully as it will be a lifetime choice.

The design does not always have to matter, I often make tattoos that customers like – flower designs, birds, etc., but there are also people for whom symbolism matters. It can be the name of a loved one, an inscription that means something to you, or, for example, your zodiac sign.

How Much Does a Collarbone Tattoo Cost?

When asked about the price of a collarbone tattoo, each tattoo artist will answer this question – it depends. Most often on the size, and thus the time needed to complete it. For a small-medium collarbone tattoo, you should expect to pay around $150-200, for the bigger design more than $250 for sure.

When calculating the price of making a tattoo, tattooers have to take into account that even with a small design, certain activities while preparing the body and the design itself are independent of its size.

Tattoo on the collarbone – what to wear?

When you go to a tattooing session to get your collarbone tattoo, what should you wear? For the day of tattooing, you can think of something loose that can be easily rolled up or removed completely (a better option) to keep the ink from staining your clothes.

Try to wear something looser for the first 1-2 weeks, afterwards, it won’t matter much, but once your collarbone tattoo heals, try wearing something that doesn’t rub directly against the area where you have your tattoo.

Pain when tattooing on the collarbone – does the tattoo on the collarbone hurt a lot?

As always with pain, it is a very individual matter, but most of my clients agree that the tattoo on the collarbone hurts more than on other parts of the body.

The pain is reportedly comparable to the ankle and neck tattoo due to the proximity of the bones.

However, I also had people on the table who did not complain too much about pain during tattooing on the collarbone, so this is a very individual matter – you know your pain threshold best, so think about whether such a place will suit you, there are locations where it definitely hurts less 🙂

How long does a tattoo on the collarbone heal?

The collarbone is the part of the body that comes into contact with clothes, so you should take care of tattoos there. Typically, collarbone tattoos take about 3-4 weeks to heal, but it takes up to three months for full healing under the skin to heal.

Tattoo care on the collarbone – what to do after a tattoo?

First of all, follow the care instructions given to you by your tattoo artist.

Avoid water and sun, and keep your new tattoo clean, and provide fresh air frequently. Hear when the tattoo artist gives care tips, they are really important and help reduce pain after getting a tattoo.

Tattoo care on the collarbone

Here are some ideas I have tested for the aftercare of your first collarbone tattoo:

  • Fresh collarbone tattoos are covered with a thin foil for the first 3-4 days, then it is good for them to have air access for faster healing.
  • A new tattoo on the collarbone should be washed every day – but gently, do not scrub, just spray lightly with water, preferably dry with a cotton pad.
  • During healing, which usually takes 3 to 4 weeks, you should avoid swimming, visiting a sauna, or bathing where your collarbone tattoo is completely submerged in water.
  • Choose your clothes so that they rub and irritate your fresh collarbone as little as possible, be careful not to scratch it, as scraping off the scabs may accidentally remove some ink.
  • The skin at the collarbone tattoo site often dries out more, so ointments such as Bepanthen or Alantan can be used on it.
  • A new collarbone tattoo should not be exposed to the sun. Even after it has healed, make sure you protect it with adequate sunscreen at all times.
